It is not illegal at all, in fact, it is encouraged.

I think your issue is a situational one. When *you* are around, people don't laugh much. They do roll their eyes a bit, however, as you walk away.

We laugh only when no one's looking.

Thanks for your insights on American culture and society. You're a 21st century de Tocqueville, and we're lucky to have you!

We Yanks could certainly learn a lot from the English. A friend visited London recently, and regaled us with stories of the tradition, history and culture. The mosques. The veiled women. The prayers, five times a day. What an interesting society - pious and chaste.

We Americans are just too boorish, I suppose.

That's foolish. You've been traveling to New York too much. Try visiting the rest of the country. The rest of us enjoy life. Perhaps we don't enjoy the same things as you, eh?

You are thinking of the old Soviet Union, as they used to say there, "In America, people are completely free to joke about the USA, we have the same freedom to joke about the USA."

No it's obviously not illegal to laugh, and thankfully we are also blessed with this thing called dental care in America. Trust me,when England encounters their first taste of dental hygiene and dental care they're going to love it.

Sid, it's not illegal, it's just that when we smile our crappy teeth show. Sort of how you don't smile when you walk down a Londonistan street, for fear of showing yours to 300+ cameras a day.....

The lack of a sense of humor in America is something left over from colonial days. Our ancestors simply didn't think British rule was funny.
