Surely we have lot more and cant we afford to have more than seven so as to include other deserving places/monuments in the list.

In the first place we dont need our monument to be included in the wonders list. Is there a doubt that its popularity will diminish if it does not get into the list. Did it become popular because it was included in the list.

There are indeed many beautiful and wonderful places to see in the world, and there are more than one list of The Seven Wonders of the World. The Greeks started the tradition by naming the seven wonders of the world which we today call THE SEVEN WONDERS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD. The only remaining one of these are the Pyramids of Giza. The Hanging Gardens of Babyon were long ago destroyed, the Library of Alexandria was lost in a fire, and the Colossus--well, no one knows how he vanished. So if yours is the Pyramids that might explain why people flock to see them. They're all that's left.

I think the Pyramids will draw a crowd forever, regardless of what list they are on or are not on. If this is not the one you're talking about, the same thing still applies. If your talking about the Taj Mahal, it's awe inspiring beauty and the wonderful story behind it will always draw crowds of people.

It's been limited to 7 only because the original list only contained 7, and was compiled by an ancient Greek, so he only included those wonders he would have known about. Some on that list were already gone in his time, (he'd only heard stories about them) and the Great Pyramid of Khufru (Cheops) is the only one still standing.

Since the list is so iconic, people have wanted to limit later lists to only 7, also. I've seen lists from later times, not just the one they've just come up with, and they all only included 7. For example, there was a list that included the Roman era that included the Colosseum, one from the Middle Ages that included several cathedrals, etc.

The seven wonders of the world were the most tremendous buildings and monuments of the ancient Greek. List of the wonders was made by a Greek architect Philo of Byzantium.

Why the number seven: my guess is that because seven is the number of perfection, completeness.

Some magazines have had votings that what would be the list of the wonders today. For instance different lists of wonders through times you'll find in Wikipedia.

The Biblical significance of the number 7 is the reason: the 7 days of creation, the 7 deadly sins, the 7 churches in Revelation, and so on.

Of course, there are more than 7 wonders, products of nature and man.
