is it possible that your service engine soon light can come on due to needing a oil change?

I don't think so; there is a separate light for needing an oil change. I know someone who has been driving around with the 'service engine soon' light on for about 2 months now; the mechanic hasn't found the reason why yet. While there seems to be no apparent reason for the light to be on, he has been told that the vehicle will not pass inspection if the 'service engine soon' light is on.

This orange 'tattle-tail' light tells you that the engine is operating outside the specs the computer monitors. It could be the fuel causing it to read too much oxygen or too little through the sensor. There are many things that will make this light come on. As long as the engine runs smooth and there is no change in performance or gas mileage, the fluids are all topped off and not dirty (changed at their regular intervals), and everything works, carry on. Don't completely ignore it, but it isn't anything to be alarmed about. When you get the RED light indicating low oil pressure or the engine is overheating, THAT is when to pull over immediately and turn the ignition off.

Your car owner's manual should tell you that. Here's a website to download your owner's manual for free if you've lost yours.
