I have just ordered a laptop, and as the question states i would like to know how to connect my laptop to my existing wired AOL connection from my main PC.

I know you're all gonna say 'go wireless' but after watching the Reall Huslle on BBC3 i think wired is the safest option.

I have heard something about a WAN cable, is this right? Would i need to install AOL on my laptop or just use internet explorer? Would my main PC need to be one and logged on to use the internet on my laptop?

Could someone thoroughly explain this to me please?

There are different ways to approach this. If you intend to leave your desktop computer on, you can simply connect a cross-over cable from the network port on your laptop to an add-in network card on your desktop. (This means that your desktop will need to have two network cards. One that connects to the modem, and one that connects to your laptop.)

Alternatively, if you have a router/modem box, rather than simply a modem, you should find it has more RJ45 (network) ports available on it. You would then simply need a straight network cable from your laptop to the router/modem. (Please note, this is a different cable to a cross-over cable.)

Another option, if your modem is just that ... a modem and not a router/modem combo, is to purchase a router. The advantage of using a router is that you wouldn't need to leave your desktop computer on to access the internet. This, of course, means that you will need a network cable to plug your laptop into the router. Many routers do actually come with all the components you need to get you started.

If you do decide to opt for a router, another advantage is that you can setup a home network, using your Windows CD, and thereby share files between both your desktop and your laptop.

Ok, you will need AOL on your laptop. Just insert your start up disc and follow the instructions.

Your existing connection to your home PC can be transfered to the laptop. I assume you have either a blue or yellow lead going from your modem/router to your PC.... this just gets plugged into the laptop instead.

Windows? Shared connection is one way to go if you have 2 ethernet ports on your other computer. The easiest would probably be a Wired Router Linksys is a good company for routers.

With two ethernet ports on Desktop PC:

Internet goes to port #1
Laptop hooks to Port #2

Set up home network from control panel and follow the screen and share the connection. It will ask you which on is internet.

Router? plug internet int router then plug the computers into the router.

First find out who your service provider is then call them and ask them if your modem is a wireless router with the ability to connect wireless or if it's just a modem. If its wireless they should be able to walk you through troubleshooting on the phone, if its not wireless you will need to be a wireless router. If you have dsl it will be a pain in the butt, just have them send u a wireless router because a 3rd party device is not supported by them. If you have cable and get a 3rd party router they won't help you, your best bet is to have best buy come to your house or have a friend/neighbor/family member help you out that knows what they are doing.
