Often to put a message in a forum or as a comment you need to register with the site. If you just want to make a quick comment and never use the site again, it can be really off-putting to have to go through the whole regiatration process.

I often end up just deciding not to make the comment. Obviously for sites such as this one (Yahoo! Answers) it's a good idea, for the purposes of building a community, but I think we should more often be given the option to leave quick posts on sites where we don't want to get involved.

Does having to register sometimes put you off using sites? Know of any articles I can read about this?

Its a way of controlling Spam
spammers use software that can post on forums, if they have to register it makes it more difficult, althought they can get around that now

I hate having to register when i know i'll only use the site once. I've always given the option to leave comments as a guest. By requiring you to register it keeps people from making spam bots and advertising everywhere all over the forum. So in a way it's good, but also very annoying.

It's so that if you make any inflammatory/defamatory or illegal comments, they know whose door to come knocking at.

Believe it or not, but some people add comments just to get things 'riled up'. They're not in it for the best of everyone.

I do agree with you though, I often find it too much hassle to register if I wish to make a simple statement/comment.

The reason is because some people use firums to post pron and malicious links having a user account means people are tracable and can be stopped.

The same reasoning is behind that system when you need to re-type the letters, this stops computer systems that are programed to leave this type of feedback.
(as the computer carn't see what is on the picture)

Main reason for all these registration process is to sell your email id. No other reason other than this. These people store everybody emails, keep it, and then they will sell all mail id's at once for a specific price.
