Bob Dylan summed up their influence best when he said of Brian Wilson's talents, "That ear - I mean, Jesus, he's got to will that to the Smithsonian."

Although not a big seller for the band originally, Pet Sounds has been influential since the day it was released. Rapturously received in Britain, it was lauded in the music press and championed by many top pop stars. The Beatles, for example, have said that Pet Sounds was a major influence on their album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Paul McCartney has repeatedly named it as one of his favorite albums (with "God Only Knows" as his favorite song) — completing a circle begun by the Beatles' influence on Wilson.

"Pet Sounds" - It was one of the greatest albums from the 1960's in terms of production, song composition, and vision. The album was more about Brian Wilson than the Beach Boys In this album, Brian Wilson was attempting to elaborate of Phil Spector's Wall of Sound.

"Pet Sounds" can also be compared to the Beatles' "Sargent Pepper" which didn't come out until 1967. Both albums represented paradigm shifts in rock history

"Pet Sounds" reflected America's loss of innocence and modern-day confusion in the mid sixties. Our country was at a cross roads in 1966. The anti war and hippie movements were just beginning.. The Watts riot had only occurred the previous year and the civil rights movement was in transition from the nonviolent tactics of Martin Luther King to the militancy of the Black Panthers.

One of the songs from the album is called "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" which may reflect the feelings of many people back then who were feeling some culture shock.. No longer could they (the Beach Boys) escape the realities of the world by paddling their surf boards out into the ocean or by racing around in their 409s oblivious to their own personal problems or those of mankind. And neither could we.
