To feel or display empathy.

Empathy is a feeling of concern and understanding for another's situation or feelings. Also, an emotional feeling of identification or understanding of a work of art.

Basically, it is "putting yourself in someone else's shoes" so to speak.

Hope this helps!

Empathy is the recognition of someone else's emotion in yourself. They stubbed their toe. You remember how bad your own toe hurt when you stubbed it. You can empathize.

Sympathy is sharing someone else's pain, even though you have never been through what they are going through. They lost their baby in a fire. You, hopefully, have not had that happen, but you can sypathize and offer your condolences.
