I've just got the ship and want to level up quicker to go to the western continent.

The easiest way is push on further. I fought on the sea for a while. There is a free Abbey on the new continent. You can fight around there, and Bacarat. There will be some good fights there.
As you keep pushing on, you will get to the first good place, but it will be a little further on where Metal Slimes are. Until that time, just keep trying to fight stronger monsters so that you get more experience points. The only drawback on the game was how long you had to spend working on Leveling Up. The other nice thing about pushing on a little, you get to some new towns, and new Weapons and Armor shops become availible.
How low are your levels now? If you do not want to leave the eastern continet yet, go back to Trodain. There are some good fights there, especially the chance to fight some Metal Slimes. The more of those you beat, the much nicer the EXP you will get.

easy - go to the western continent. that's all.
when you get to the northeast tip of that continent, there is an abbey-like place with a free inn. fight one fight, rest, repeat until the fights become easier.
