x^5 + 8x^4 + 20x^3 + 10x^2 - 21x - 18
----------------------------------------------------
x^4 + 9x^3 + 29x^2 + 39x + 18

Synthetic division only works if you are dividing by a binomial.

You would have to use long division in this case.

If you divide it out, you're left with (x - 1).
