I am reading "The Talisman" by Stephen King, and a running joke in it is calling someone chum, and they respond, "Don't call me chum." I know I've heard it before but I've never understood it. What gives?

It means pal or friend. It can also mean fish or shark bait. Which one fits bests in the book? With Stephen King's sense of humor, I'm guessing shark bait.
