I've always wondered what these words meant and assumed they were names for unamed things. Any difference between the two? What are their origins?

There is no difference, it is simply a reference to something whose actual name has been forgotten. Also synonomous with dohickey, doflotchie, whatchamacallit, gizmo etc...Origins are N. American

A Thingamabob is used to describe items that either you can't remember the name of or that don't actually exist.

A thingamajig refers to a specific object of which you can't immediately remember the name of.

The two words mean basically the same thing. It is a regional thing. It depends where you are from as to which you tend towards. A deffinition follows.

thingamajig means something obsolete

For example, can you figure out this sentence:

"Rhinotillexomania is thingamajig for trichotillomania"

It means. "habitual Nose-picking is a forgotten word for obsessive nose-picking."
