Not to be too witty, but you might try spell checking first! Yes, reading is crucial to one's command of language. The greater one's vocabulary, the easier it becomes to banter or to communicate at a variety of levels. learning a foreign language helps too.
Also, you might try taking public speaking lessons. I think you will learn a lot about dealing with folks, language, wit, and a whole myriad of items I sense you seek. Toastmasters is a good way to obtain this type of training.

Reading helps - but I'd like to think that your sense of humor's in born!
I'm sure you have a great sense of humor, maybe you just need too loosen up around people to actually let it show more...
I think life tends to shape your sense of humor more than anything else.... Most people thought I was witty in school - but with time I guess my humor took on a cynical edge and I became a lot more sarcastic!
Warning though - wit can be really funny if people get it, if they don't...well, it'll just leave you pulling your hair out in frustration and people being confused a lot!

Try going to www.toastmasters.org and find a meeting near you. It will give you practice speaking and being around other people, and you'll learn how to ask and answer questions and how to be witty quickly.

take classes at a community college its cheap and you can meet new and interesting people. The more you know about something the better your input will be.
