how do they keep a supply of fresh water on the space station. i figure they probably take some up when they send a shuttle but do they have filters systems to recycle it?

It's recycled using a processor that collects humidity from the air (ie the crew's breath!).

yes. they have a filter system to recycle the waste water, yes, including toilet water.
