Nothing whatever to do with ol' G W! A Bushwhacker was a 19thC Australian bandit. They lived rough out in the bush (wild country, not a shrub) and they whacked people.

A "bushwhacking" is a surprise attack. The word is used not so much because it's accurate, but because it has "bush" in it, referring to President George W. Bush. It's effectively saying that it's the American people who were attacked (the "surprise") rather than a legitimate enemy.

It means ambushed, or being the victim of a surprise attack. I believe it comes from the days of the wild west, when attackers would hide in the bushes and then jump the wagon train.

It basically means the same as ambushed - to be attacked by an enemy who is hiding and waiting for you to come along (geurrilla tactics)
Literally "whacked by someone hiding in a bush"
