Each major league team has development contracts with about half a dozen minor league teams at different levels. The minor league teams are mostly independently owned and operated (except for Rookie-level teams in the Arizona and Gulf Coast Leagues, which are owned by the parent club).
The major league club owns the contracts of all players on a minor league team and has the right to move them around the system. They pay the players' and coaches' salaries and a few other expenses. The minor league team is responsible for marketing, stadium operations, and other local expenses.

When the Major League team needs other players because one gets hurt or starts sucking real bad, they look to their Minor League and Farm Teams for more players. It's like a Major League...farm

The minor league teams are basically what a junior varsity team is to a high school varsity team. In some cases, like Roger Clemens this year, its a way to get a player ready to play in the Majors. Teams also use the Minors as rehabilitation for players who are coming off injuries to see where they are physically without them being a liability in the Majors. Each Major League team has at least one Minor League Franchise from single-A, double-A and triple-A. Some teams have more than one minor league franchise at each level.

Each major league team has minor league teams. Players that are not ready for the big leagues for whatever reason play for the farm team. Those players belong exclusively to that major league team

A majority of farm teams and minor league teams are actually methods of recruiting for many major league teams. Take into Consideration the Dayton, Dragons of Ohio. They are a farm team for the Cincinnati, Reds.
People who do really well in teams like the Dragons often times get drafted into the Major Leagues.

every major league team has three levels of farm teams. single A, Double A and tripple A.... tripple A being the closest to the majors. unlike in the majors, where winning is the primary goal, developing players is the #1 objective in the farm system
