Americans will lag behind if we don't shape up in the mathematics, science, and technology subjects. This is the reason American Corporations and Ivy schools form partnerships with other countries such as India and China. A great book to read on this is The World Is Flat by Thomas L. Friedman.
Why? Maybe there is not enough motivation and support from the family as a lot of parentsthey buy lots of video games and most don't have time to go over homework with their children.

It's not a race thing really. My late husband who was Irish was very, very good at Math but he sucks at natural sciences which i excel. Intelligence is inherited. Work and study ethics are developed or nurtured.
Lack of interest; taking things forgranted;and easy money are reasons. Once, the potential college student tastes that income. whether pumping gas or bagging groceries. No matter how meager, they completely lose interest or have any ambition to further their education and develop to their fullest potential.
They also form relationships such as a steady girlfriend at an early age. That's why the rate of literacy here in the US is low compared to other countries.
However, that's slowly changing. The student population here is growing by leaps and bounds. Family planning and parenthood are shelved for these late boomers. They realized that the only way to improve their standard of living is by going to college.
Areas of improvement are in the fields of Math and English grammar ; spelling.; study and work ethics.
