I know the producers and the guy who plays him both confirmed in interviews that he is, but maybe its just a thing there doing to add to the mystery of the show

I don't know, the producers seemed pretty straight-forward about the fact that if he didn't die, then the whole point of making him into a hero would have been wasted.
