You must learn it takes all kinds to run the world: Good, Bad and the Ugly.
The best way to handle people that disrespect you is to demand respect or remove yourself from their presence.
Of course, at work, you cannot leave. Yet, you can. Speak to them only about the subject at hand and then move from their space. Let your boss/supervisor know if they are verbally abusing you, IT IS AGAINST THE LAW FOR EMPLOYERS TO ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN.
When spoken to directly in a mean manor, simply act as if you are alone. Respond to anyone but them about anything else and go on with your life. I DO NOT SPEAK TO THESE TYPE OF PEOPLE AT ALL, UNLESS THEY APPROACH ME RIGHT. I STAY EVEN TEMPERED AND UNFEELING AROUND THEM....NEVER LET THEM SEE IT BOTHERS YOU BECAUSE THAT WILL SPUR THEM ON MORE. I LET MY BOSS KNOW THAT I WILL, BUT DO NOT WANT TO WORK WITH PEOPLE LIKE THAT.
IN A SOCIAL SETTING, OUTSIDE OF WORK, IGNORE THEM AS IF THEY DON'T EXIST....BECAUSE THEY CANNOT PICK ON YOU WITHOUT AN AUDIENCE OF YOU!
DON'T LET OTHERS STEAL YOUR JOY! ONLY YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR HAPPINESS!
GOOD LUCK, GOD BLESS

Better if you had mentioned what kind of job or environment you're in. Anyway, as you know, there are actually different types of people. In a service-oriented environment for instance, you will encounter different types of customers like, as you said the difficult ones, amiable or friendly ones, bossy, talkative, etc. Now, there is actually different ways to handle each type of person. For the difficult one, always remember, do not argue with this type of person. Listen to what he/she says or wants. Repeat what he/she said to confirm and act quickly and do not delay. Also, don't forget to wear a smile while dealing with him/her. The difficult customer will even make your life difficult if you presented yourself with an unpleasant face. Do not give negative body language like you're sending signal that you don't like the person. If you act positively and give quality service, you will earn respect. I'm sure of that. Hope this helps.

Just act as if you could care less what they think, and go about your normal business. If they act disrespectful, mention that you would appreciate it if they treated you with the same respect that you have always given to them.

neither do i sometimes. best maybe to give back what they give to you or what you think they can or should handle ..something like that. cuz the other way, do unto others the way you would have them do unto you just means that people walk all over you.

If you project wimpy,wishy-washy attitude, people will pick on you. You have to respect yourself first ,before people will respect you. Others is our mirror.
