If you're taking a picture outside, you should do it when it's overcast or else early in the morning or at sunset. These times make for the best lighting.

My personal opinion is that it's better not to use flash. You can set your camera on a very high speed and then you don't need a flash. Having a flash adds a lot of unneeded problems.... but that's just my opinion.

When it comes to poses, some of it depends on what features are attractive on a person. However, it's always best not to take the picture right in front of the person. try to take it at an angle that's flattering for the subject.

The rule of thirds is always a good thing too...
You can learn about it here:

hope that helps :D

You know how sometimes taking an upclose picture of yourself with the flash can be unflattering? well if you just put a coffee filter over the flash it looks better but you still get some light..

This is too big of a question to answer here. There are too many variables involved. I'm a professional photographer, and one of the answers I give to people the most is to read your cameras owners manual quite often. In fact, read it several times a year. It will remind you of so many things, and how to do them. Good Luck.
