I got 14g snakebite piercings on April 20th (not for fashion; for personal reasons). You can get 16g piercings which are a bit smaller; my preference was for the larger ones though (no particular reason behind this for me).

The piercings cost me $120 including jewelery. I spent another $50 on antiseptic overall (a bit overboard but worth it), and $45 on new biplast jewelery when the piercings healed.

The piercing process isn't overly painful. They will mark the spot where the piercing should go, allow you to confirm that it's what you want, then squeeze your lip and push the needle through. (For me, this involved hardly any pain and no blood; I did not use any form of anaesthetic or ice.)

They will then push the jewelery through; this may involve stretching the hole which will pinch a little.

Changing the jewelery once your piercings have healed is a different process... you'll simply be able to put the new ring/stud through the hole.

You will need to keep your mouth clean (inside and out) using disinfectants and mouthwashes for up to 2 months; your piercer or pharmacist will be able to recommend suitable products for this purpose. I used Difflam-C mouthwash for the first week (this contains a numbing agent) and Cepacol thereafter. I also used Protat spray for the outside of my lip.

My piercings healed in under 6 weeks, with no major inflammation. I had to be very careful at first not to bite the backs of them, especially while eating, because I had very long studs to allow for swelling (this is standard practice). This is less of a problem now I use shorter biplast studs (biplast is a transparent plastic which I expect will cause less damage to my teeth than surgical steel; I can also put transparent heads on the studs to make them less noticeable for job interviews etc.

As for whether snakebites are hotter, it really depends on your facial structure and personal taste. Look online for photos of other people with lip rings/studs and decide which look(s) you like best; you may even wish to try digitally altering a photo of yourself to get an idea of how your new piercings will look.

Once you've gotten the piercing, resist the urge to bite the back or play with it with your hands, as you may damage your teeth, introduce germs or preclude the piercing from healing properly. Clean it after every meal and brush your teeth thoroughly with a new toothbrush.

Best of luck for tomorrow, and I hope you enjoy your new piercing.

Re: syrious: The area is not always sore; in fact, after the first few days, if the piercing is kept scrupulously clean, you should feel nothing more than a slight itch (indicates that the area is healing).

My original, long studs got in the way of eating a little -- they had to be long to allow for swelling while the area healed. My new studs don't get in the way at all.

I can't comment on the BJ factor, but I have made out with someone (don't do this while the piercings are still healing!) with no complaints from either party -- and I had spikes in there at the time!

'syrious' also commented on the social factor, so I'll give some background on myself:

I'm a 23 year old computer programmer, 3 years full-time employed. I perform my job competently and socialise well inside and outside of work with people of all ages and backgrounds. I regularly touch base with members of the management teams I work with, and have been approached with client facing job offers due to my rapport with these people as well as my technical and soft skills.

Incidentally, I'm an ex-goth with blue hair, ear nose and lip piercings, and a tendency to dress goth on casual Fridays ;)

"Respectable" people know what is important and what is not; my appearance does sometimes spark conversation, but it does not hinder me professionally or socially. This may not hold true for everyone who is into body modification, but my experiences have always been positive. In fact, some people (managers included) seem to respect me more because I do not let my working culture dictate cultural norms or prevent me from changing myself in the ways I feel are necessary.

deborah made a valid comment: "You really have to think about it" -- I couldn't agree with this more!

I personally have a rule whereby I decide exactly what I want, and make no changes to that decision for at least a week prior to getting it done. For tattoos, that waiting period is closer to a month. If you are still changing your mind in the days leading up to getting a mod, don't do it! You need to be sure this is what you want; even less permanent mods leave some risk of scarring if they are removed.

You have to really consider it... I guess you haven't done your research since you're asking all these questions... maybe you should take some more time to make a decision. The biggest problem with lip piercings is that they hurt your gums eventually, and some people have issues with those and take them off at some point.

If you do decide to get it, talk to the piercer and try to find a spot on your lip that won't rub against your gums as much. I got mine done higher on the inside of the lip so it doesn't rub my gums, but it does rub my teeth sometimes.

it doesn't hurt, it can be bad for your teeth, I'm only a 16g, a 14g is the size of o tongue stud, and I thought that would be too big for my face.

the piercing artist should be able to answer any questions

The first time I had my lip pierced it was with a hoop and it messed up, when I took it out and re-pierced it with a stud it was fine. the second artist said hoops move to much to heal properly

I think facial piercings ruin the looks of a pretty young lady.

If you are wise, do not get your lip pierced. You will only suffer later. Don't take me wrong, i am just telling this for your own good.
