Mac & cheese here too, but I like the white cheddar best.
Actually Kate, I did grow up poor. We often only had bread and coffee for staples, sometimes beans. But we're not talking about being poor people here, we're talking about being broke. It's different because it's temporary.

Soup. It's good for you (except the sodium). Ramen noodles for grains.
Restaurants? Taco Bell is cheap (unhealthy, but cheap). Wendy's $.99 chicken sandwhich, baked potato, and a water. Complete meal for $2.
Almost forgot: balogna sandwiches

More like just bread...the things you people are nameing are not "broke" foods, whatever that is. Obviously, you didn't grow up poor. I would've killed for Mac n' Cheese when I was a kid...

Can of chicken meat and a can of chicken gravy heated together and poured over mashed potatoes. We call it "chicken slop." You can also pour it over egg noodles or onto toast.
Baked beans on toast is even cheaper.
Grilled cheese sandwiches are also cheap.
