Comparisons are part and parcel to the sport, any sport really. If 10 years ago you'd said Wayne Gretzky would be drawing comparisons from a 19 year old kid who hadn't even won a playoff game, I'd have thought you were crazy.
That's the thing about projected potential. Obviously Reyes hasn't done anything truly impactful yet, but the prevailing sense is that if ANYONE is going to reach the rarefied air Jeter has spent his career in, it's likely to be the kid across the river.

I am one of the biggest Jeter fans out there, so obviously I don't think Reyes should be compared to Jeter, at least not yet.
I do have to say that Jeter has not won any MVPs yet, although he's been ripped off twice, in 1999, and again last year. Those who say he is overrated do not know how much he does for the Yankees.
I would disagree with the gentleman who says Jeter does not produce in the clutch. Jeter has been consistently at or near the top with RISP and in late-inning pressure situations, even better than David Ortiz. The reason you don't hear about it is that Jeter doesn't hit the walk off homers that Ortiz has. Perhaps this Craig S should check HIS stats before he makes such incorrect statements. Obviously he has no idea Jeter has a .318 career average (Clemente's was .317), and after tonight, he has 2242 hits, and won't turn 33 until next week.
Here are some of Jeter's 2007 stats for you, genius.
.500 with the bases loaded
.351 in late game pressure situations
.446 with runners in scoring position
.556 (YES that's right 15-for-27) with runners in scoring position and two outs.In a word CLUTCH!!
Yeah, Jeter is horrible.

U should word ur question "comparing Reyes to Jeter", but that's okay.
I agree with u, let Reyes win a World Series, come up in the clutch more, and actually bat over .300 (hes only done it 1 time).
Like I said, comparing a futre FIRST BALLOT HOFer, 2 a guy who shows flashes of greatness, and then flashes of being a stupid player.
There r not many players u can compare 2 Jeter, and Reyes should not be in the conversation. 3rd best SS in New York:
1. Jeter
2. A - Rod
3. Reyes

It isnt fair to a younger player to compare him to someone as established as Jeter. Reyes is a pretty good player at this point in his career. But he wouldnt be the first "next superstar" who burns out long before the guy he's compared to. If either of them were playing in anyplace but New York, nobody would even mention it.
Statistically at the same point in there respective careers, they have similar stats with the exception of stolen bases. Yes, Jeter has the rings, but I dont put much credence in that. Rings are a function of many things besides the individual player. But day in, day out, if you watch what Derek Jeter brings to the table, it is obvious that just being a great player doesnt rise someone to the level of someone like Derek Jeter. He is a consummate professional and has been for 12 years. Reyes has some big shoes to fill. And he may do it. But he's not there yet.
Remember a few years ago when Eric Gagne was annointed as the best closer in baseball because of his streak? Better than Rivera? Well, guess what? That never really panned out, did it? Same thing here. Give it some time.
EDIT: Guys like Craig S show one thing. They have no clue when it comes to baseball. They look at things with blinders and prejudice, and demonstrate an ignorance about that game that is legendary. Now you can not like Jeter because he's a Yankee. You can say he isnt great because he doesnt hit homeruns. You can use some ridiculous formula to say he lacks range or whatever. Do whatever you want to discredit him. It's OK. Because anybody who knows anything about baseball knows that Derek Jeter may be the best all around player in the game. Did you hear Joe Morgan last night? He is a notorious Yankee hater. And even HE couldnt stop praising Jeter. He may not be the most outgoing guy in the game. You may dislike the man himself. But if you want to be taken seriously as a baseball fan, you have to recognize him as the great player he is. If you dont, you can only be taken as a fool

Admittedly, Reyes is too young to start comparing him to Jeter, but both players are electric and bat at the top of the order. Unlike Jeter though, Reyes steals many more bases. That's the only real difference. He's got a long career still before anyone can truly put him in the same category as Jeter, but right now, Reyes is the better player.

Reyes is a great young player, but Jeter is way ahead of him. Jeter has about 200 more hits than Pete Rose did at the same age. He's on pace to break Rose's record for all time hits. Reyes is great, but Jeter's a Hall of FAmer.

If I had to build a team around any player in baseball, it would be Jeter. Sure he has some limitations at short but there is no one in baseball that has his work ethic, his hustle and his smarts. In the clutch, he's great.
Derek Jeter is a great baseball player and to aspire to his level should be the goal of every young player..

I agree that it's early for comparisons, but when did Jeter win the MVP award? He won one in the World Series, but not a "real" award.
Also, does anyone bother looking at the stats when they call Jeter a 'clutch' hitter? His numbers with RISP aren't much better than his numbers at any other time, and there are plenty better than him. People need to start looking at stats, and not just making stuff up because they only remember the great things Jeter does.
