From my source:
"Sir Isaac Newton (4 January 1643 – 31 March 1727) was an English physicist, mathematician, astronomer, natural philosopher, and alchemist " (yes, alchemist... respected position at that time :))

There was a brief time frame when his mother tried to make a farmer out of him ... didn't work out, thankfully for science :)

He was elected Lucasian Professor of Mathematics in 1669.... a position now held by Stephen Hawking.

For details on what that means, check this link:

He also had a political career... check this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isaac_Newton#Newton_and_the_counterfeiters for details about his dealings as Warden of the Royal Mint and how he dealt with counterfeiters (it was considered high treason, counterfeiters (if convicted) were hanged, drawn and quartered.)

He was a mathmetician, he was a professor of Mathmatic at Cambridge from 1669 to 1687, and spent the rest of his life in government service. He was a member of Parliament, Warden and later Master of the Royal Mint, a Justice of the Peace, and King's Attorney. He was also President of the Royal Society of London from 1703 until his death in 1727.

In addition he was a member of the landed gentry, thought not titled, and recieved a sizeable income from his estates. His rents along with his income as Master of the Royal Mint made him a wealthy man.
