What is the point of getting married? If a couple loves each other, trusts each other, and is committed to each other, isn't that enough? does being married really matter? Why not just live together and have a life together without being married?

There are benefits if you don't have a lot of money, but if your rich, I see no need for it.

Studies have shown that, without marriage, commitment is not as strong and the couple are more likely to split up. The ceremony matters because the need for ritual is built into the human psyche and it is a way to proclaim commitment and seek the support of the "community" which surrounds the couple.

Tying the knot makes it more permanent and solid-feeling. If you're not married but just living together, there might be a feeling in the air like "I could just walk out now if I wanted to," or "If I find someone better I don't have to go through a messy and expensive divorce," you know? At least that's how I feel about it.

O.K. I call Peter my husband. We have not been legally married but when our son was Baptized our Reverend blessed our union during the same ceremony.

Now, having said that I still want to get married. I would want a pre-nup and still get married.

What marriage would mean to me is a declaration to the world (I don't want any more than 25 at our wedding) of Peter's love and commitment for me. It is not about the security of a piece of paper it is about a tangible symbol of us engaging in a ceremony to declare our love and unfortunately a matter of respect from him and the world. We are very commited to each other and our family but we I am still treated rudely by women at our baby group with comments like "your not married you wouldn't get it". I am always catching people looking at my left hand checking for a ring. His friends wives and girlfriends (and mine) are constantly asking me if he has asked me yet. Quite frankly it makes me feel like crap.

I love him and our life but pray for that ultimate declaration of our love and commitment to each other.

Maybe he just doesn't love me and is secretly waiting for something better to come along?

You tell me!

medical insurance is cheaper. Also, security for children. Also, pension benefits if one person dies. To let the world know of your love. If it doesn't matter to you than just do it if the other person wants to.

There is no point other than to enslave men for eternity with a controlling nazi of a woman. Get married and find out for yourself.

Marriage is sacred and you're trying to reduce it to nothing...There is nothing that can compare to being united in sacred matrimony with your soul mate.
