that is because you do not have audio driver installed correctly, or not installed at all.

go to your manufacturers webpage where they will provide you with the right drivers for you specific computer

You need to reinstall your Audio System, follow the following procedures:

Start | Control Panel | System | Hardware | Device Manager | Sound, video and game controllers ....uninstall everything under this option and restart your PC. After restarting Windows will ask you to install the driver.

After reformating you have not installed sound driver it is on your motherboad driver cd if you are using an onboard sound.
