I'm beginning to think my family is alone in this...
Shrek was just nasty - I didn't finish it. Frankly some of the jokes in G-rated movies are gross to me. And I would never consider watching most PG-13 movies -they should be rated R. It's shocking. Do people really let 13 year old children watch garbage like that?
Anybody else feel this way?!
p.s. If it affects your opinion in any way, I'm 18.

1. I think Shrek is filled with unnecessary bathroom humor and sex jokes that are supposed to go over the kids' heads. What, like I'm supposed to enjoy them? Plus I could do without seeing some ogre's backside.
2. Movies are not my moral compass - the Bible is. And I don't use movies for a babysitter either. However, it gets frustrating that there are no halfway decent movies for me to watch. I'd like to know what you think is entertaining about sexual jokes/actions, gratuitous profanity, and other forms of disrespect?
3. just curious, I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU. I HATE how adults/authority figures are painted as doltish and stupid, and how kids are the heroes when they outwit the idiotic parents. By the way, did you notice in A Series of Unfortunate Events how every adult was weird and skewed, and the kids were the innocent victims? That bugs me...
4. Zero Crest, I agree with you as well. The fact that somebody drew it instead of acting it doesn't make it any less

...offensive.
5. I already stated what I think is wrong with Shrek.
6. the chip, I can sympathize with your point of view as well. I know that I will not do things just because I saw them in movies - although I still won't watch a movie with a good storyline depending on the amount of trash that's in it. What bothers me most is how much of it is being advertized as suitable for kids. Refer to my rant about the PG-13 rating...
7. trancequ33n, who do you think you're kidding? Any 13 year old with half a brain and the ability to listen and observe his/her surroundings DEFINITELY understands the jokes in Shrek. I grew up fairly protected (don't start a new argument about this, OK people?) and by the time I was 12 I could easily catch many 'off' jokes.
8. Tootsie, I know that Shrek was PG. That's why I listed it before the G-rated movies complaint.
See above for my thoughts on Shrek..
And I read a LOT, more than I watch movies.. but I like to watch movies too!!

To those of you who mentioned Happy Feet - I felt the same way!! Some kids I was babysitting watched it and I was extremely surprised at the content, and even MORE surprised when I discovered the rating!!
And did you see Ella Enchanted? That seen with her 'shaking her booty' was SO unnecessary!!!

No sweetie, you are not alone. I'm 30 and some of the trash that comes across the movie screen still shocks me.
I rented Happy Feet a couple of months ago and was outraged at the very adult content of this movie. It was marketed to children, but was on a very adult wavelength. My God kids were completely bored with it.
Don't let anyone ever tell you that is what people want to see because it is simply not true. Most movies would still do well if they would leave out the language and/or sexual content. For example Titanic. People would've still flocked to the theaters even without Kate Winslet's nude scene. I think it comes down to Hollywood trying to push their morals (or lack of them) on conservative America.
Good for you for standing up for your family and your values.

I don't understand why you thought Shrek was 'nasty'.But I do agree that PG-13 movies should be rated R. And if it's rated R, then the rating should be R+ so parents' would know it has a lot more gore then the rated R movies. And unfortunately parents' do allow children to watch movies like that at 13. I think that for PG-13 movies you should have to be at least 15 to see. And for rated R movies you should have to be at least 18.

No, you are not alone. I'm almost 15 years older than you are, and I wholeheartedly agree. The language grates my ears and a lot of the "humor" is just crude. I haven't seen Shrek yet so I have no opinion on that.
When I was growing up, R-rated movies were completely off limits. There were still X-rated movies around too (I sound old, I know haha). Then they came out with the PG-13 rating and it's been downhill ever since. Most movies that are PG-13 would have been rated R 20 years ago.
I'm glad you have such a good head on your shoulders. Keep it up!

I semi-agree with you.
I defintately don't believe that these little children should be allowed to watch higher-rated movies such as PG13 and R, and I do think the MPAA (the people who rate the movies) need to be more strict and stop letting some of the more graphic things into PG13 movies, but in general I believe that if you're a mature adult and can understand the difference between right/wrong then there's not a huge harm in it.
for the record, i'm 18 too.

your not alone in fact someone should start a TV channel that removes the bad language from shows shown on TV that way everyone can enjoy them, I mean there are alot of great movies out there that if you take out some of the unnecessary parts. Movie makers figure in this ignorant time of age (and I'm being nice) that cursing is required to make a good movie. Also sex in movies should be rated better then it is now of days, but what do you expect from a world that is almost getting rid of GOD or some times goes to the extrem limit and make fun of him and those who enjoy it will pay the ultament price at the end.

im 18 as well and i think that it just depends on the person. yeah people shouldn't let their kids watch some of the stuff that is out there. Come on, no13 year old even understands the jokes in shrek. It's your choice whether or not you want to watch PG-13 movies or not. that's why they have ratings...to warn the audience.

Shrek was pg not g. there is a difference. Did you time wrap in from the 50's or something? This is nothing new. And its all a matter of personal taste. If you don't like it you don't have to watch it. And Shrek was an ogre. By reputation Ogres aren't exactly clean cut creatures. Try reading a book instead. Most of them are better than movies anyway.

I absolutely agree. I don't think that language and sex scenes add anything to the quality of the movie, in fact sometimes it actually ruins it for me. Then there's the issue of children. It's bad enough they add crap to what's supposed to be a kid's movie (is it ment to go over their heads?), what about the parents who think nothing of taking their young children to PG-13 or R rated movies. Why because they really wanted to see the movie and couldn't find a babysitter. Come on people!!!!

I live in Australia we have new shows all the time, we get all our television here fast tracked, most the shows mentioned we see here before they are shown day's before airing in the US. Well I heard a whisper if this strike dosen't they will have to start airing top Australian made shows in the US. Only they will have to be fully modified of all sexual and language content. Don't worry most the Actors you already do see in the top US TV shows are Australian actors anyway. I work in Television
