ok first of all if anyone ^^ said anything about microsoft tracking u down, they won't...can't, actually is the word. They CAN'T track u down legally without getting a court warrant. the installation and activation will most likely work, because microsofts piracy catching is not very good, but it is considered stealing, if u could live with yourself after doing this :)

1... If Vista was preinstalled, what you have copied is the Crash Recovery disk.
2....... Have you tried to run the "VISTA" disk ?
What is the message/s you get ?
3 ......... The company has the particulars of your friend, ( when he returned the PC and the store/shop/company made a refund)
4. If the PC(laptop) is sold to another person, he will definitely make a complaint, and your friend will land in trouble.

The activation code has probably been used (and it definitely would have if he had Vista up and running and activated during the time he had it), and it's probably tied somehow to the computer - some weird OEM stuff or something similar. Probably not a good idea to try it!

well that would be pirating Vista.. and MS would not like that... and no you can't install it on yours...
if it was pre installed it would have been registered for that computer... by the OEM with all the serial numbers of the components in that system... so you will be caught out sooner or later..

When the next owner tries to register it and it won't because the number is already in use, I hope they call your friend and request payment for the operating system he stole from them that they had to replace. I hope they also report his theft to Microsoft and the police.
I am sure they record your IP address date and time when you register Windows and do updates; this is enough information to track you down. To make it even easier, be sure to use your real name and address when you register it.

Don't risk it, even if you feel like getting free copy there are safer ways. I'm not gonna go into detail for obvious reasons but chances are it has already been activated.
