Overcharging is the most common cause. Anything over 14.7 volts is considered overcharge. Check the charging system voltage with everything in the vehicle off, and the engine running. And rev the engine up a while as well. If the voltage goes higher than 14.7, you have a regulator issue.

Did you have the alternator checked ?? That would be a good place to start I have seen it a few times when a alternator went bad and was over charging the battery also a short can cause a build up of heat

over charging is the most common cause for this ,that would be in the alternator,if you take it of and take it by any auto zone they can test it for you for free, this will help determine if its good or not,the only other time i have seen one boil was from a bad ground wire, and that's rare to see that happen, but have it checked,it can make the battery explode if it boils it dry of water, good luck with it.

Sounds like you were trying to put too much juice back into it. What does the voltage regulator read? Either that or you have a short somewhere and the battery is passing a lot of current. Most likely, overcharging.
