I just started watching it and I got confused when my friends told me that she was a "guy" before she became a Servant..

She is King Arthur. Her father, the king was afraid that the people of his kingdom will not accept a female ruler as he did not bear any sons to inherit the throne. She made Arturia (saber) pretend as if she was a boy and trained her to be a knight. Since she is the only heir to the throne she pulled caliburn from the stone and becamethe ruler of her father's kingdom but her people argue about her humanity. She thinks that she failed to fullfill the duty of a king and thus regret her life. Before her last breath she became a servant for a wish. The wish is that she would like to redo the selection of the king so that maybe just maybe a better ruler might lead her people with peace.

She is Arturia Pendragon. Her character was inspired from King Arthur.

She is King Arthur, rather Queen Arthur. You will learn more why she is referred as guy in history later on the series.
