I have a lienholder on my car and make payments. I would like to drive into Mexico for vacation. I have US insurance and understand I will need mexican insurance. Can I drive my car in Mexico without owning it outright and having my title in hand? I have heard two different stories on this and am trying to get a straight answer.

Wow!!! That other answerer is WRONG!! if you are only going a short ways across the border or to Sonora or Baja you do not need a car permit. But if you ar driving anywhere else you sure do. you need to stop in the first town on the other side of the border and go to the car permit office...cost is abut $100.00 and is good as long as your visa is good. If you just have a tourist visa, then it is good for 180 days. To get this permit you MUST have a letter from the lein holder giving permission to take your car to Mexico for a specified period of time. CALL the leinholder...they have special departments that do this. When you get the letter, make 3 copies. keep one in car, one in wallet, one in luggage. you also must have a valid credit card for them to run an imprint of. If you try to leave Mexico without your car they charge you a $400.00 fine as it is ilegal to sell an American car in Mexico. You also need Mexican car insurance. You can get short term insurance and it is cheap. My favorite place is San Xavier in Tucson...1-888-377-1570. www.mexico-autoinsurane.com

Yes, its no problem. They never ask for registration when coming back into the states and the Mexicans don't care if the car is stolen. You don't have to have Mexican insurance. If you do get it be sure and read the fine print. If you don't do exactly as said in the policy they cancel it and you are out of luck. Remember, almost nobody owns their car free and clear these days. no worries.
