I hit my Central heating unit's wires with the weedeater and now it will not turn on whats wring?

Today I was weedeating the yard and I accidently got the weedeater tangled with the wire that connects the unit to the house. Actually this wire holds 8 wires which split once it reaches the inside of the unit. All the wires were stil intact and the only damage was to the rubber cover on the outside of the wires. However the unit will not turn on. The thermostat in the house reads 81 degrees right now and it is 10:00 at night here. It is so hot in the house. I have all the fans on. My question is what is the problem? is it the wires wil they have to be replaced although they are intact? Or is it the Actual unit that has broken, or could it be the thermostat? Oh yeah forgot to mention that EVERYTHING is connected it the unit and the house. I looked and nothing was pulled out of place or anything like that. Thanks so much

If only the contractor had put the low voltage wire in conduit.

Most likely when the weed eater hit it it pulled some of the wires loose inside the condenser. On most condensers the low voltage wires are not clamped in place where they go into the unit. All that there is is a rubber grommet to protect them from chaffing.

If you shut the power off at the disconnect to the unit you can open the access cover where the wire goes in. Hopefully it is only one wire that pulled loose or you will have to look at the wiring diagram and figure out what goes where.

I would be more concerned as to why there are unprotected wires in a place where you could cut them with a weedeater.
Sometimes these wires are 115-240volt and other times they are harmless low voltage types, either way it is not your job to be finding out. Call a qualified air conditioning technician tomorrow to have the damage repaired as exposed wire is dangerous in so many ways.
If you have a problem getting an A/C person to come out promptly due to being busy at this time of year you could at least consider calling an electrician to make the wiring safe.

You damaged the thermostat control wire. If it is an A/C unit, only two wires will be hooked up. If it is a heat pump, you may have three to seven wires hooked up.

well, if you know how to do a simple wire fix i think your best bet would be to change those wires. You might not be seeing something. But if you dont know how to do that then i would guess you need someone to look at it anyways. So, that would make the most sense. I hope you get it fixed soon. But yeah, hard to believe you could do somehting like that with reprocussions and that not be the problem.

You probally shorted the transformer in the furnace or there may be a fuse in the furnace that looks like a automobile fuse it will be 3 or 5 amps, or the thermostat but more than likely the first two

check the wires with the power off you probably removed the insulation from some wires and now you have a short,separate the wires so that they do not touch each other, and than try putting ac on,or wires are loose.
