My Betta was healthy and he still seems so. But, I didn't know how to properly clean my 3 gallon tank. I had let some waste bulid up on the bottom and didn't see it under the gravel. Well, I used the Eheim Gravel Cleaner and also a siphon from the pet store. I changed the water about 25%. The water looks a lot better and I am going to test the nitrate/ite level in a minute because it was kind of high yesterday. It was 1.0. So, I notice now that the fish has a bit of a ragged fin. Very, very slight. I had fin rot in my other fish but he is doing well now, but I am afraid for this fish. I will be going on a trip in a week. So, I want to try Melafix on my fish with the start of what looks like a rugged fin. It is just tea tree oil. Is that okay? I don't want a harsh treatment since he has Maracyn-Two last month in his tank because he seemed sluggish and the other fish was sick . Plus, if I am going to start it, I want to start now so his treatment will be over by the time I leave.

Yes, using Melafix on ragged or cut fin is fine. It should not harm anything, in fact Melafix heals cuts very fast in my opinion. I use Melafix to heal cuts on my fishes fins and I also use against diseases. Although for some bacteria infections and other tough diseases I use a medication specifically for that disease. On most Fungal Infections I use Pimafix which is meant for fungal infections. Since you said that the ragged fin was very slight I would not worry about it because the fin will heal its self over time, but if you just want to be sure then you can use it. If you are just treating the ragged tail then use Melafix, if you are planning on treating more of the disease then the fin then I would use a product specifically for that disease.

Melafix is a noncure. It MAY help to prevent some diseases, but it is not a strong enough material to cure a bacteria disease.

Melfix can help prevent some infections such as fungus at the site of a wound, but not cure a bacterial problem once it is active on the fish.

You would be far better off treating the problem aggressively and curing it properly before you leave.

I prefer using PimaFix. MelaFix is more for an injury or when transferring new fish. And, I think they work better when you use it right from the beginning of signs of a problem. And they won't cure all diseases, but do work well for fungus, fin rot, etc.

I used Melafix on my fish and they got better quite quickly. I think it was within like 2-3 days. I don't think it is too harsh treatment as long as you are taking care(which you seem to be) of the tank and not using too much for a long period of time.

I have a degree in Marine Biology and have been working with the fish trade for awhile. Myself and pretty much any pet store I have worked in have chosed to use Melafix. It is good for fresh or saltwater and won't harm any inverts you may have.

Melafix will work great if your fish just has an injury but if it got a disease you may want to try something stronger, that is specifically meant for what is wrong.
