I would like to see a link to this...if he did say this...regardless of the reason...he is done once this is public information. I would think he would not be so stupid as to make such a comment...but then stranger things have happened.

If he did in fact say this it is not because of the choice of book people above (lol). The point of the practice is to ensure that those who are religious and practicing take their job's duties serious and act humanely as all religions encourage. Few religions endorse mass slaughter/genocide and such.

And the religious book tradition is not limited to the bible in any way.

The oath is also the only part that is necessary

Here to help is right, but I will add that whether anyone likes it or not, our country was founded on Christianity. They included the part about freedom of religion because the Puritans felt that they were not able to practice their form of Christianity under the Church of England's critical and judgmental laws.

Almost certainly, the answer is no.

Obama is a Christian. Some of his opponents, not constrained by any affection for the truth, have tried to pretend he is a Muslim. I would strongly doubt any story like this unless it is easily traceable to a legitimate news story carrying specific quotes. Otherwise, odds are it's an internet rumor.

Okay, firstly, let's revise your sentence.
"Did Obama say he wouldn't swear on the Bible if elected?"
"If so, did he state religious reasons?"
There you go.
Now, I have no clue what the answer to this is, but I support his decision if he did say this. We do not have an official religion in this country. Why swear on the Bible and not the Koran, etcetera?

First time I've heard this, anyone got a link? Sounds like nothng but a rumor to me, why would he even bring something like that up at this juncture, doesn't make much sense. He's a Christian, why would he object to a Bible?

EDIT: Joecool's got a good point, if this is true, it would have to be for that reason.

What would the Bible have to do with it? God and the
Bible has been out of the schools and other public
places so long no one would notice it anyway!

I haven't heard this. I do know that Obama is a Christian and a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ.

I don't know, but I don't think it would be religious reasons as he is an open member of the christian faith. If he said that, it must be for moral or ethical reasons. Maybe he feels that it's an outdated practice?

Liar. You are getting scared because you know he is the next president. That is good. Stop the propaganda, and calm down. Its all good. Just stop spreading your lies before you find yourself in court for slander.
