For those who say gay is the male homosexual I think that is a poor answer, you will find that gay is often used as a synonym for homosexual rather than for a homosexual male.
I don't think gay is an exclusively male word as many people use it in context of women yet lesbian is never used as a male term.
I don't think there is a specific term for a gay male apart from 'gay male'.
There may be some history as to why there is a gender specific term for a gay female and not a gay male but I wouldn't know what.
Interestingly though derogatory words for homosexuality do have a male/female coupling.

Homosexual, it's an equal opportunity name. In Victorian times, the Queen refused to sign a bill about male and female homosexuals because she did not believe lesbians existed.

when a dude is homosexual, they're gays

Its just that gays are more common than lesbians and that the general world community is still a patriarchal system, hence we tend to refer to the male aspect of stuff.
