QUEEN. They are the only band that has successfully attempted multiple genres of music. Jazz, disco, metal, pop, rock-a-billy, opera, blues...you name it! They have done it all, and done it masterfully!

First there was Rush, then Queensryche and Dream Theater. Now most of the good stuff can only be found with little known Euro-bands - Pyramaze, Avian, Dragonforce, Blind Guardian, Demons & Wizards. I don't feel that the USA National Metal Scene has contributed very much from a "progressive" point-of-view. You can thank Clear Channel for that. They only play "Radio Friendly" music, 3-4 minute songs.

Who's the 'most' progressive is really up to you.
Some of my recent favorites are;

Mors Principium Est
Nocte Obducta
Opeth
Porcupine Tree
Spock's Beard
Subway To Sally
The Mars Volta
Tiamat

Note: I really can't believe people actually think of Nickleback as 'progressive'.
Amazing!

Being progressive means it has to be modern otherwise it is just an old sound. That being said i have to say Mastodon. No one sounds like them, plays like them, or touches the imagination like them. They are a Pink Floyd and Beatles to the modern metal generation.

Samanta is right. Nickelback is great but how about Green Day there still big and also we can't forget about Linkin Park. best 3 bands of today. Oh and Three Days Grace and Hinder are making progress.

King Crimson
They were one of the late 60's/early 70's original prog bands and (in a different form) they still resurface from time to time. And they remain as unpredictable as ever.

I'd have to agree with Porcupine Tree.

Some people need to look up their musical definitions, I mean seriously, Nickleback? My Chemical Romance? Linkin Park? What?!?
