I absolutely agree with you that talking properly has absolutely nothing to do with "talking white". But I'm not agreeing with your logic. Firstly, people do not "talk white" any more than people "talk black". There are people who speak English. And, of those who speak English, there are those who speak various dialects/sub-languages of English. The English language has greatly evolved over several years, so I don't see how anyone can determine whether or not someone is speaking "proper" English. Secondly, don't forget that not all white people speak English. So, as I said, talking "proper" has absolutely nothing to do with "talking white".

You're very right. Talking properly has NOTHING to do with race. It disgusts me and angers me when people say that I sound like a white person. I'm from Canada originally, and every person, regardless of their racial group, has a similar way of talking in Canada, particularly in Ontario. It has nothing to do with race. I talk the same way that the people in my surrounding while growing up talked--I can't help this and I wouldn't change it for the world. the way a person talks has to do with the way you were brought up to talk, cultural surrounds, etc.
Its very insultive particularly, when a black person says it. I mean, is that black person saying that blacks are incapable of speaking english properly? I mean come on...get off the ignorance...

Some people have white and proper mixed up. This aggravates me to hear "that is a well spoken black person" comes outta someones mouth! I mean, why is it such a big damn shock to people? I'm white and I talk far from proper, I have way too much south in my mouth. ;)

that's true $0.02, my husband's a journalist and the president of a journalist organization, plus he works with the public and with the mayor of a nearby city. people who only speak to him on the phone are surprised to find that he's black...when the only reason they assume he's white is because of his flawless speech and "properly" spoken english....some would even accuse him of acting white, when in reality, we are very intouch with our heritage, our community and our peers. it really is disturbing to be negatively judged simply because you choose to speak properly and acheive great things. it's a loose/loose situation...you can't everyone happy....
