I have successfully used a paste made of Dawn dishsoap and baking soda. I let it sit for a few hours and laundered as usual. It worked on an oil stain that had been "set" for months.

There are 2 issues here. The oil may contain dissolved dyes that may bond to fabrics, especially if natural or synthetic(that just about covers the options!). The oily part should come off with any good laundry detergent, however the dye will need chemical treatment from an Oxy-bleach like Vanish. (Chlorine based bleaches are a bit aggressive and may themselves add a yellowy tinge to some fabrics.) Used oils , especially used motor oil, also contain very fine particles typically of carbon and if these are deposited in the fibres the only removal is by repeated washing till the marks are sufficiently reduced

Fire usually works pretty good. Just toss the article of clothing in a roaring inferno and leave it in for about 10 minutes. Should be good as new.
If that doesn't work, you are probably screwed. You may be able to get the stain out with chemicals, but even if you do get the color of the oil out, the texture where the oil was will always be different than the rest of the article, and chances are you will end up doing more damage to the area trying to remove the stain.

Put a little bit of baby powder on the stain (just enough to cover it without leaving excess). Put a towel over the baby powder and iron it. It should get it out
