First of all, check local laws. Some areas don't allow ferrets, as they can ruin crops.
Ferrets and dogs are like humans, they have personalities. I think ferrets are more likely to have independence, and they can be more playful.

Ferrets can not be taken outside in the heat. They will want alot of company, whether is be you or another ferret and you can not leave them caged alot. Dogs must go outside and be worked with for training. You definately should not have both, most small dogs don't like ferrets. Ferrets can have large vet bills and more issues. Both are cute, but very different. If you want to know what it is like to have a ferret go to a ferret shelter and volunteer your time, then you will know if one is right for you. We have 5 total, they are wonderful.
http://pets-place.net/FreePetContest.html Templeton is in a contest this month and our Pierre is at the top, he won last month. Good luck to you and your new friend to be...

We have a 10 month old doxie and I don't regret getting here. She is so much fun! She's great, she's fun, funny, independent, loves people. So far vet bills haven't been a lot. We paid $350 but I have noticed from state to state they cost more or less. Depends on the breeder also. I will say they can be stubborn, especially the potty training. You have to have patience. I will say I heard horror stories on potty training. We got her at 7 weeks and constantly took her outside so she got the idea. We also have another dog and she learned from her. I don't know much about ferrets but I hear they are great pets also.

ferrets smell very badly. people can tell you that you can have the scent gland removed, but it doesn't really help. they are also less loving than dogs. i would go for the mini daschund. take a look at the long haired ones. they are really cute. a daschund will be like a best friend who loves you unconditionally and follow you everywhere. ferrets could care less if you exist. think of them like rodents, not so loving!

Definitely any small dog over a ferret.
I had a pair of ferrets and they ARE a lot of fun but they are difficult to house train and are pooping machines--their poop is smelly and gooey and you will have it all over your house unless you keep your ferret caged at all times you are not actively playing with it or watching it. I could clean their enclosure and in one day it looked like it hadn't been cleaned for a month--yes, that much poop. Ferrets are said to have a musky odor but this smell was never an issue for us. I am in Texas and they are legal here--in CA they are illegal--check out yor state's law like previous answerer suggests.
In my experience, dogs are much better companions than the ferrets were--but maybe that's because I couldn't get over the excessive pooping. And believe me, their poops closely resemble a loose human stool but smaller--about the size of a tootsie roll that is a little melted.

Besides "more independent" and "funner," find out how much they cost to own (regular checkups, cost of spaying/neutering, etc) and how much time you need to commit as an owner (time to train, walk, clean up after, etc).
Being a pet owner is more than just playtime -- your pet is 100% dependent on you for its welfare. Take that responsibility seriously.
