Do the more expensive ones really last for years?

I would recommend the compact fluorescent bulbs. They are made in pretty much any application you can think of now. I know that they are quite a bit more expensive, but they save you about $10 a year in energy cost. So that makes the cost issue a wash. The last much longer. I installed them at work about 2 years ago. The lights in question, are rarely, if ever switched off. They are still burning. When we we were using regular incandescent bulbs I was replacing them about every 6 months.

The best bulbs made now are called Compact Fluorescent Lights or CFL for short. They use less power than regular incandescent lights and last for years. They do have two downfalls though 1) they are not dimmable and 2) they are a little more expensive to buy, but the money you save on your electric bill by using them will pay for them several times over making the final cost a lot less. Also by using the CFLs you are using less electricity and helping clean up the environment.
Hope this helps, Roy

There are two types of bulbs that you have to choose from. Compact florescent (CFL) or long life incandescent.

If the bulbs will be installed in a location that gets turned on and off a lot you will want to use the long life incandescent. If you are using them in a location that they will stay on for a long time the compact florescent will be the best choice.

Compact fluorescent bulbs are rated from 6000 hours to 20,000 hours and the incandescent are rated from 1000 hours to 4000 hours.

If you use the florescent bulbs in a location where they are switched on and off frequently they will not last much longer than a regular bulb. They are designed to be on for long periods of time.

If you buy long life incandescent bulbs make sure they are rated for 130V as they are much more durable.
