I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that big sports fans get really into their teams. In my experience most of the people that say this are actually asking a loaded question or believe strongly for the point that is opposite of what you are making. Since nobody wants to think that their team is inferior, they assume that you are just answering the way that you are because its your favorite team.
That, and everyone always thinks they are right. If you disagree with them then you must be wrong.

It's not because they feel literally part of the team. It is because they feel spiritually tied. These teams represent their home towns, all of it's citizens, and fans from all over. People just tend to feel connected to their teams.

its because true sports fans are the extra member on the team. they can help the players do better. The fans can basically help a team win. like in football home field is an advantage.
