John and Paul both were. In interviews, John has said that he was pretty much leader in the early days, but Paul was in the later years. In fact, you would not have had Magical Mystery Tour or Let It Be if it were not for Paul pushing those projects. None of the Beatles have ever contested this (nor has anyone connected with the Beatles) so I would take that as being the truth. My quetion is to the person who asked the question: if someone gives an answer that isn't that same as yours, how does that make them dumb? And what is your answer? As for artistic output? There was a book several years ago that put all of their songs together, noted who wrote what, and it turns out that McCartney actually had more songs.

There was really no leader of the Beatles, but the band under a different name was started by John Lennon.

The Beatles in no way declared one member as a results of fact the only chief. yet one ought to argue it must be the two Paul or John, since they have been the main significant singers and considerable songwriters, and the two maximum outspoken of the gang. however the way I see it, The Beatles did no longer have a pacesetter. the gang labored in simple terms like a democracy.

George Martin made all their ideas work.
I think he was the greatest influence on their sound.

John and Paul

John was clearly the leader from the beginning to the year of I think 1965 or 1966. But unfortunately, he lost interest on the band in the year of 1966 or 1967 especially after he met Yoko Ono.

Then, in the year of 1967 Paul took over the leadership role. Ever since then, Paul became the band leader until the band break-up. Paul handled almost everything during the later part of the Beatles career.
