I've seen old movies with flashes of popcorn, yet never had the urge to get some, how does subliminal advertising work, and does it always work?

Yes, it works.
In the "olden" days, movie houses would use subliminal messaging to promote the sales of popcorn, hotdogs, drinks and candy. Sales were very good.
It was then banned by law to stop business from overtly coercing the public into buying things that they would probably not have purchased.

It works better for some people than others. Some people are "suggestable", and for example, they are more easily hypnotized, etcetera. It doesn't work at all in some people.
It is basically the power of suggestion. It plants the thought in your mind. What you do with that thought is up to you. If you are weak, you are more likely to follow that thought to the point of purchase....
Have you ever seen a picture of a food that you like, and then suddenly feel hungry? Have you ever smelled the cinnamon from that cinnabon place and did you know that they purposefully pump the smell into the mall and/or airport to induce purchases?

No. The greatest advertising is done by the public because we all want what others have and we all feel the need to compete. It is society that starts new trends. People either like the product or advertising or they don't. For instance the wheres the beef comercial became famous but I wouldn't say that the commercial itself helped sell hamburgers. It did sell bumperstickers and t-shirts though. lol

It works somewhat, but not as well as an actual add for that product. You'll notice in movies these days the ads before the movie starts for stuff they sell at the concession stand.
