Foxes of any variety are very timid nocturnal creatures. Most people who have ever seen one will vouch for this as it is almost always at night when they are scavenging for food. They are extremely cautious and fear humans.
If one ever attacked a human, it would be under one or two extreme circumstances:
1) The human was close to its den and it had babies that it thought were in danger (and it still may not attack)
2) It was sick possibly with rabies
Other than these two incidences, I have never heard of any variety of fox being aggressive toward humans.

Gray foxes are harmless to humans. Pets that depend on the animal. Poultry and rabbits are prey to foxes. Dogs on the other hand are no means danger of a fox. Foxes are afraid of dogs since humans have been hunting foxes with foxhound for many years. Gray foxes will attack if there provoked or have that disease called rabies.

Not unless they are either ill with rabies, or it's a case of a vixen protecting her den and cubs. We have a couple of fox families living in the woods behind our farm, and they have never attacked anything that I am aware of, other than the prey that they must kill in order to eat. Foxes are normally timid and afraid of people- I have never seen an aggressive one that wasn't also seriously ill with rabies.

I was attacked last year in UK on a hiking trip across the south downs. I was dozing about to go to sleep in my bivy bag under a tarp and suddenly something came out of the dark straight for my face, which I fortunately blocked just in time. A short but pretty vicious attack ensued until I beat it off. Quite a shock to the system though. Apparently no rabies in UK so best theory is it mistook my face for a chicken.

A fox would only attack in self defence. They are a very mild and timid animal of the canine species.
