I know a girl that is smoking crack cocaine. She also breast feeds her baby. I didn't understand why the baby was always crying when she was away from the mom. Today I found out she is doing drugs. The baby is 10 months old. If the baby does not breast feed from the mother, how lond will it take the baby from not being addicted, assuming the baby is.

I have reported this to the child abuse hotline. My daughter is babysitting the child and the baby is in my house. I just hope the CPS comes here before the mother decides to pick up the child.

If that baby is addicted, and I guarantee that it is, it needs medical attention to help detox. It will need to be weened off from the drugs and there are medications that the hospital can give it to help ease the baby through the transition. Any other way of detox, such as just letting the baby go on its own can cause shock to the body and cause lots more harm then good. Please help that baby find the proper medical attention that it needs...it could save that babies life!

There is really no chance that the baby is NOT addicted, but detoxifying baby is not as easy as just taking the drug away.
Baby could have severe physical withdrawal symptoms, and it would not be impossible for baby to slip into a coma/ and or die, if the drug is quit cold turkey.
A doctor will need to supervise "weaning" the baby off of the drug. They will give the baby small amounts of the drug, slowly making it less and less. They will monitor the whole thing, and it is really the only safe way to save baby.
What you need to do is call the police, the child welfare agency, anybody that will listen. You know what is going on, and it is in your hands now to save this baby's life.
You can remain anonymous when you do this. Just please, do it.
Still need more convincing?
Think of how small a baby is compared to an adult. Now, remember that a good portion of the drugs mom is using is passing through to the child.
Mom may be getting a small dose, but when it passes through to this tiny little one, the dose is much higher to him/her.
This also means that if one day, mom decides to do more than the usual, and then feeds the child, baby could be getting ten times the usual.
That could mean an overdose, and could even cause instant death.
If you care about this child at all, call someone. Don't let this baby die because of mom's inability to control herself.

I suggest you call Child and Family Services right now. This baby could have a number of complications from the cocaine/crack. This woman should lose her child before something goes terribly wrong and the baby dies. If you don't call this will be on you.

Call social services NOW. That woman is endangering the life and well-being of her child.
I guarantee that baby is addicted, and may already have suffered damage. It will take weeks to detox her.
You know about it, so you have a responsibility to that kid. You can report it anonymously.

Call the police NOW on this girl. That child is in severe, immediate danger. If you're scared to do it and give your name, call 911 from a pay phone and don't give your name. It's not ideal, but It's better than not calling at all.

There are no negative effects, only positive effects of breastfeeding till 2 years. WHO recommends breastfeeding till 2 years. This is also good for the child's dental formation and food chewing habits.
