It is not reflex nor is it in a politeness handbook. It is not abnormal to feel tension or to fear mistrusting a stranger. Feel positive in your self and people may reflect it back to you. I think it's a communal protection condition. When they get tired of seeing you repetitively and word gets around as to where you school and work and who may know you, they may relax a bit. It is an understandably slow security process.

Honestly I dont really see the need to say HI to people. I think if you get eye contact or some other form of awarness of each other then the need for saying HI is not really there unless you actualy want to start a conversation. If you say HI and they say HI back and then you walk along does that leave the person any better off then if you had just noticed them and hopefuly they noticed you and you go on your way. Basicaly I wont say HI to someone unless I'm feeling really gitty and hoping for a conversation from them or they say it to me first. It takes two. If you say hi first they'll probably say it back. If you continue saying it and you get no hi back then stop saying it. In this world if we say hi to everyone whether we know them or not we'll end up saying Hi all day long. Instead of thinking of it as a personal insult just think of it as a cue from that person that they have too much to do to stop and chat. Get over it

I guess people have just gotten used to kind of minding their own business. But I smile and say hi to people all the time. I even talk to people on line in stores and I love to talk to kids. Pax - C
