The NBA plays on wood floors because that's the best forum for playing basketball on. It's the easiest to maintain and provides generally the most consistent surface (of course, the old parquet at the Boston Garden might not have been all that consistent...).

The games are played indoors, so grass would be impossible to grow properly, and the wear and tear on grass would make a dangerous situation for players.

Teams have way too much money involved in athletes, and concrete is bad for their joints, and would cause more severe injuries than wood when they fall. Therefore, concrete is out.

Clay wears down too much. When you watch a tennis match, the clay becomes worn and ruts often begin to appear. The wear on the floor often would become a hazard to players.

As well, the rim is ten feet high. Because of wear and tear on clay or dirt or grass, the rim might end up being more than 10 feet high. The maintenance to keep the rim just at 10 feet would be unworkable. But some NBA players have been known to comment that they can't dunk on their old courts - because they've worn the dirt out and the rim is now approaching 11 feet high.

Grass courts are bad because they would make bouncing the ball from the ground very tough to do consistently. Concrete and clay floor offers more bounce to the ball but it's not safe to play on because if a player were to fall or dive for loose balls, they could risk injuring themselves. It is the same reason why many people prefer to play volley ball at the beach on the sand rather than on cement grounds or blacktops because it allows them to dive to the floor for a shot without getting hurt. Wood floors are better for the sport of basketball because you can maintain it through waxing to keep it smooth. Running back and forth on wood floors offers less resistances than concrete, clay, or grass floors and helps players move more fluidly. It also looks a lot better too.

The NBA plays 82 regular season games a year and that don't include the playoffs. If they play on concrete flooring, half the players will go down with various knee and foot injuries before the season is over. On grass, the ball won't bounce that good and the game won't finish because of turnovers.

Honestly, I think it's the stupidest question I've ever read...

Why wood? Cause it doesn't hurt much to fall on wooden floors than on concrete ones. Just imagine yourself with all of that athletism, jumping up and down the court, and making a wrong fall and falling with your back first on a concrete floor..

Well the most basic surface that beginners play on is the hard court so that's my favorite coz I'm most comfortable on surfaces that i am more familiar with.Hard courts are really good for normal players unlike clay or grass that really need special tactics to play on em,Clay for me is way to unstable coz it doesn't feel right and grass is way too fast for me coz i'm just a beginner so basically i'll stick with hard courts.
