The Leopard was a British warship, a cut down line of battle ship, which fired on the frigate USS Chesapeake while the two countries were at peace, in order to stop and search Chesapeake for" English deserters" amongst her crew. The Brits did this several times in the run up to the War of 1812; the Leopard incident was the most egregious with the most killed and pushed the US into actual war with the Brits.
