I travel for a living (I'll have the same job there), so we need to be reasonably close to a major airport, but we'd like to find a nice neighborhood where we can find a great house for around $250k, live safely, have kids, etc.

We'll be looking for a 1 year rental property first, to get to know the area before buying a house, so I'd like to know what neighborhoods to look for or to avoid.

Also just general opinion on how the people are there. I've visited, and I liked what I saw, but then again lots of people visit Miami and never see the filth that is the reality of this place.

I'd like to hear opinions, good or bad. But educated ones, please - no guesses, and no ignoramuses.

BTW, my husband will have to find a job there, and we have no kids. Yet.

i live in jax. depending on where you travel the airport is pretty central and when it's not you're 2.5 hours from orlando!! at 250K you can live in a GREAT area - the housing market here is pretty soft. friend just bought a new home on the north side for about 195K. you might want to try st johns county also - little bit better schools unless you're looking for private schools. the ages of the kids matters as well. not knowing what your husband does for a living -- unless he's the primary care giver of the kids - he can probably find something here. look at jaxjobs.com or the local paper is www.jacksonville.com.
i love jax and while there are some area that are a little "blech" the majority are super!!
