Make the list no matter how far off the holiday is. It's something that you can continuely add to, or take off of, well before the holiday arrives. If it's something you'd like, add it to the list, then take it away if you either decide you don't really want it or if you get it. Besides, if your birthday is between now and Christmas, your list can be used for your birthday as well.
