When you find a house that you are interested in, check to see what are the names of the schools around there and go to www.greatschools.net type in the school name or city name and search. It will show you the ranking for any school in any state. You can also do city searches, where it shows you the top ranking schools for every city.

Also, it will give you student to teacher ratios, ethnicities and sometimes there are parent/teacher reviews.

assuming the state department of education [check their website] does not have or offer comparative statistics, the most likely case is that school district with the highest average family income will be ranked 'best'.

while that information is possibly available for census tracts, etc. from detailed census reports, the practical work around is to buy the cheapest home in the best neighborhood you can afford.

Now that I've said that ... the all time number one factor found by educational researchers affecting the quality of a child's education is the dedication and determination of the child's mother.

Children can and do get excellent educations in poor schools, and in poor and underperforming districts.

Mothers are about twice as important any other factor, or as important as all of the school based factors combined.
